VETSmile was launched on July 1, 2021, and is the first pilot program implemented by the VHA Center for Care and Payment Innovation (CCPI). The program connects Veterans with community dental care providers to enhance access to continuous and comprehensive oral health care services. Proper oral health is shown to positively impact overall health and wellbeing and reduce the burden of chronic diseases. However, more than 85% of VHA-enrolled Veterans do not qualify for VA dental benefits and often forego essential dental care. The VETSmile program aims to fill this significant gap in care by serving as the first touchpoint for Veterans who do not have a regular dentist and who may need help paying for dental care. In its first two months, nearly 200 Veterans have received free or discounted dental services from VETSmile community dental providers in New York City and New Jersey. Program impact is expected to increase quickly as CCPI works expeditiously to implement the VETSmile program across the US.
