Soldiers with the U.S. Army 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery (Hamilton’s Own) conduct live-fire with tanks including the M1A2 Abrams in Torun, Poland during May 2019.
The U.S. Army 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery traces its lineage to January 6, 1776 and is the oldest Regular Army unit on active duty. It is the only active Regular Army unit with credit for Revolutionary War service, and one of the few with credit for War of 1812 service.
The 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery’s nickname, Hamilton’s Own, is derived from its origination … as the New York Provincial Company of Artillery that was led first in the American Revolutionary War by Captain Alexander Hamilton, who would later become one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton was also the first first United States Secretary of the Treasury and a trusted member of President George Washington’s first Cabinet.
