Marine Corps Base Hawaii’s remembrance of its proud legacy, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the U.S. military’s vitality on the Mokapu Peninsula, and 66 years since the establishment of Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay.
Marine Corps Base Hawaii didn’t start as much. It was commissioned as an army military reservation in 1918. A single defense battalion occupied the Mokapu Peninsula for three decades. In the tumultuous years preceding World War II, Imperial Japan began stretching its tendrils into the Pacific. Recognizing Hawaii’s important strategic position, President Roosevelt ordered the construction of Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay. – December 7th 1941, a date which will live in infamy.
